We are looking for one person to live in our small, very basic off-grid cottage in Poraiti. Long-term home for someone who genuinely enjoys gardening, property maintenance & simple living.

This is not a conventional modern rental and it won’t suit everyone. It is a simple, functional place for someone who genuinely enjoys a quieter lifestyle, being outdoors, gardening and looking after a property.

The right person’s interest in gardening and property maintenance will be a major factor in deciding who we rent to. We are particularly interested in someone who is motivated, practical, self-sufficient and would actually enjoy spending some of their spare time pottering around the property.

The cottage is compact, with: *Open-plan living/kitchen/bedroom area *Separate bathroom *Basic kitchen *Parking *Rural/off-grid setting in Poraiti

The cottage is very basic and partly furnished. It is not a fancy or modern home, and the successful tenant would need to provide their own bed and couch and other furniture.

There is currently no outdoor living area, although we may look at adding a small deck and some form of roof/shelter in the future.

Completely off-grid This is genuine off-grid living, so you need to be comfortable with that lifestyle. *Electricity is supplied by solar. *A petrol generator is available for periods when solar power is low. *Hot water is provided by a gas califont. *Water comes from a tank and goes through appropriate filtration for drinking. *There is currently no heating or cooling but we would be happy to discuss possible heating/cooling solutions for the right person. *There is no internet, you would need to arrange your own connection/mobile solution.

There is another cottage on the property with a permanent resident. Some services and costs are therefore shared between the two cottages, such as additional water deliveries and gas/fuel associated with the generator. These arrangements would be discussed clearly with the successful tenant before moving in.

Gardening & property maintenance This is the part that is particularly important to us.

We are looking for someone who wants to be involved in looking after the property, rather than someone simply looking for somewhere cheap to live.

There will be opportunities for paid gardening and general property maintenance, potentially including things such as: *Gardening and weeding *Planting and maintaining garden areas *Mowing *Pruning *General outdoor maintenance *Keeping the area around the cottage tidy *Other practical jobs around the property as needed

This would be separate paid work, rather than work being required as part of the tenancy.

Preference will be given to someone who has genuine interest, experience and motivation in this area. Someone who works part-time, works from home, has flexible hours or simply enjoys spending their spare time outdoors could be an ideal fit.

We are much more interested in finding someone who will take pride in the property and enjoy looking after it than someone who simply ticks the boxes for a rental.

The ideal person would be: *One person only *Looking for a long-term home *Practical, reliable and self-motivated *Comfortable with genuine off-grid living *Experienced with or very willing to learn about solar, tank water and generator use *Keen on gardening and outdoor work *Physically capable of general gardening/property maintenance *Someone who enjoys a quiet, simple lifestyle *Ideally working part-time, remotely or with flexible hours *Non-smoker *No animals — the property is not fenced and we do not want the additional complications of pets
